Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup borax
  • 1 1/2 cup washing soda
  • 1 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sea salt
  • 20-40 drops optional: essential oils see note

Instructions

  • Mix ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl. (See note before adding essential oils)
  • Pour powdered detergent into mason jars and use a funnel to help keep it mess-free.
  • Store with a screwtop lid in a dry place.
  • Use 1-2 Tbsp for every laundry load.

Notes

The dryer cycle takes out the essential oil smell. If you plan to line dry your clothes, the scent is a nice addition. But if not, I would personally just leave it out to avoid wasting money on that. I leave mine unscented for that reason.
Not every water system handles powdered detergent well (or so I have heard). We live in a 1950s farmhouse and we have never had any issues, but it is something to note as a possibility. If this is a concern, then you can easily liquify your detergent by adding the powder to a small mason jar with 1/2 cup of hot tap water or so, cover, and shake until mostly dissolved.

These cheesy scalloped potatoes are a simple, yet dressy side dish. Thinly sliced, herby potatoes baked golden in a homemade cheese sauce.

I’ve been thinking so much about how God designed the seasons and how much they impact things, including our cooking. As the last of the leaves begin to fall and the dinnertimes are darker, I find myself opting for cozy foods with candlelight.

Spring brings vitality and renewal to the earth and its food brings crispness with its spring greens, fresh snap peas, and strawberries.

Summer is the season of overwhelming bounty with fresh fruits and vegetables, like blueberries and tomatoes and zucchini and fresh herbs…to name just a few.

Fall brings a slow hum to the garden, and it shifts to harvesting root crops, cabbages, and some hardy greens.

Then…Winter. The garden is put to bed, the daylight is short and the air turns cold. In colder climates, God puts a blanket of snow, it seems, as a reminder that this is a time to rest. The earth needs it and we need it. The cooler temps encourage me to bake more so that the oven can warm the cool kitchen. Breads, soups, root crops…all such warming, nourishing and filling foods. None of those things are particularly what I want in the middle of a 100 degree summer day after sweating outside or spending the day at the lake. But it’s the perfect food for winter. It’s been such a vivid remind to me that God has an order to creation and an order to our pattern of life. When we pay attention to His order in creation, maybe it will change the way we live and cook, too.

3. Over medium heat, melt butter in a small pan. Add flour and mix well. Cook the flour and butter mixture over medium heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

4. Add the milk slowly, while stirring continuously so that the flour does not clump. Stir slowly over medium-low heat until the mixture thickens.

5. Take off the heat and add shredded parmesan, cheddar, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano and salt. Stir together until the cheese is melted.

6. Pour the cheese sauce over the arranged potatoes.
