Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup borax
  • 1 1/2 cup washing soda
  • 1 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup sea salt
  • 20-40 drops optional: essential oils see note

Instructions

  • Mix ingredients thoroughly in a large bowl. (See note before adding essential oils)
  • Pour powdered detergent into mason jars and use a funnel to help keep it mess-free.
  • Store with a screwtop lid in a dry place.
  • Use 1-2 Tbsp for every laundry load.

Notes

The dryer cycle takes out the essential oil smell. If you plan to line dry your clothes, the scent is a nice addition. But if not, I would personally just leave it out to avoid wasting money on that. I leave mine unscented for that reason.
Not every water system handles powdered detergent well (or so I have heard). We live in a 1950s farmhouse and we have never had any issues, but it is something to note as a possibility. If this is a concern, then you can easily liquify your detergent by adding the powder to a small mason jar with 1/2 cup of hot tap water or so, cover, and shake until mostly dissolved.

This recipe makes 8 fluffy fresh-milled, whole wheat hamburger buns. They are soft and super simple to make!

“Using up sourdough discard” is a great excuse to make chocolate cake. This chocolate cake recipe is a family favorite and I simply adjusted it to a sourdough version. It is now my little girls’ birthday request!

This recipe can use active or discard starter and can also be fermented or not, depending on your preference. If you want to have some gut-friendly benefits, I would recommend letting it ferment about 8-10 hours. It will give it just a slight tang, but not a very noticeable one.

Tips for making this recipe:

-The key to having a moist cake is pretty obvious: not over-baking. Make sure to check doneness 5-10 minutes before the timer goes to see where it is at. Every oven is different! Insert a toothpick gently into the middle. If it comes clean, then it is done baking. If baked right, this cake is super moist.

-The key to the cake loaves staying in-tact is allowing them to cool in the pans some before removing them. I recommend the cake pans with the swivel cutter at the bottom to make removing them as easy as possible. Allow them to completely cool on a cooling rack. If you bake them in parchment paper, just pull the edges away from the sides of the cake and let them cool like that. They need to be fully cooled before frosting them.

-The better quality the cocoa powder, the better the flavor of the cake! My favorite cocoa powder is the Organic Cocoa Powder from Azure Standard. That cocoa powder also makes delicious homemade hot chocolate.
